Die Weiterentwicklung lernender Algorithmen, die Verfügbarkeit großer Datenmengen zum Anlernen dieser Algorithmen und steigende Rechenleistung haben die erfolgreiche Anwendung von Funktionen aus der Künstlicher Intelligenz (KI) ermöglicht. Zu diesen Funktionen gehören unter anderem Spracherkennung, Sprachverarbeitung, Bilderkennung, Vorhersagen und Robotik. Entwickler können mit KI-Funktionen bestehende Systeme verbessern (z.B. Übersetzungssoftware) oder neue Technologien entwickeln (z.B. intelligente Lautsprecher). Solche Informationssysteme mit bezeichnen wir als KI-basierte Systeme. KI-basierte Systeme beeinflussen die Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Maschine bei der Lösung von Aufgaben. KI-basierte Systeme können Menschen bei immer mehr Aufgaben unterstützen oder diese sogar selbstständig lösen. Darüber hinaus können Systeme durch die Anwendung von KI-Funktionen menschlicher erscheinen und anthropomorphe Wahrnehmungen erzeugen (z.B. durch die Interaktion mittels Sprache). KI-basierte Systemen ermöglichen es Unternehmen effizienter zu werden oder neue Produkte und Dienstleistungen zu entwickeln. Diese Systeme müssen jedoch sorgfältig konzipiert und implementiert werden, um unerwünschte Auswirkungen wie Diskriminierung durch Verzerrungen in automatisierter Entscheidungsfindung zu vermeiden. Die beschriebenen Entwicklungen werfen zahlreiche Fragen auf individueller, organisatorischer und gesellschaftlicher Ebene auf.
